Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. An estimated 12 million Americans attempt suicide yearly. For every woman who dies by suicide four men die by suicide but woman are 3 times more likely to attempt suicide. Recently there has been a new trend of the semi colon tattoo. This is now labeled as Project Semicolon which is described as “a faith-based non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and love to those who are struggling with depression, suicide, addiction and self-injury.” This was founded by Amy Bleuel in 2013 after her father committed suicide. The semi-colon is significant because it represents the author having the choice to end the sentence but choosing not to.The author is you and the sentence is your life. You have the choice not to end your life. This is an important movement because it empowers those who are recovering from issues with suicide, self-injury, depression, trauma, and anxiety.
If you’re struggling with suicide and self-injury, just know that it is not the end for you and you’re the creator of your own story and life. You can change your current story into a new story where it includes your ever present power, growth, and strength. Know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and you’re life is worth living. You have purpose and can use your life and your story to instill hope, inspire, and motivate others to share their stories and be a light in someone else’s life.
